Lewis and Clark Learns

Second graders at LC participate annually in a Caldecott reading challenge.  This is a great way for me to share information about the Caldecott Medal and give kids the opportunity to focus on award winning books across the years.  It also gives them a glimpse into the GKCReading program that 3rd graders in the Kansas City area read.   After an introduction about the Caldecott Medal, the kids read 12 Caldecott winning books of their choice.  We pull all of our Caldecott winners and have them on a cart only available for our second graders.  We have so many kids reading that I also let our local public library know when the program will start so they can gather more books from their branches.  To celebrate our reading, we have a good old fashioned milk and cookie party.     

Second grade students have until May 10th to complete a Caldecott Reading Challenge . This voluntary challenge encourages students to read the beautiful award winning books and complete a comprehension card about each book. Students need to read 12 Caldecott books in order to be invited to a Milk and Cookie Reading Celebration . This is a great program to work on perseverance and working toward a long term.

Second grade has also been working toward a reading challenge. After we finished our Show Me Reading Award Program, I wanted to get the kids ready to read KC3 Nominees independently. Each year I challenge my second graders to read and respond to at least 12 Caldecott winning books. This year 50 students reached the reading goal and completed the challenge! Today we celebrated with a good old fashioned milk and cookie party. We snacked and watched several Caldecott videos . I am so proud of all the Caldecott readers and especially pleased that many of the readers didn't stop when they reached the goal...they just kept on reading.
